Along with the accused, two women personnel were also injured in the attack by the accused. Officer Twinkle Goswami, the in-charge of Panbazar women police station in Guwahati was also injured in the incident.

“The officer, who sustained minor injuries in her leg and hand, is admitted to the hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable.”

The accused was absconding after allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at a hotel in Guwahati along with four other men. As per the complaint filed by the victim’s mother, the culprits, who sexually assaulted the girl, recorded the incident and threatened to leak the video of the victim if she revealed the matter to anyone.

On February 19, the two men, promised to delete the video of the girl only on the condition that she meet them in another hotel. When they met, the accused along with others forced themselves on her.

The Police booked the accused under the Indian Penal Code, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Information Technology Act.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said in the assembly that crime rate decreased in the state following police action on alleged criminals when they try to escape from custody or attack any police personnel.

There has been a 30 percent decline in the crime rate, taking into account the number of cases registered in police stations during January-February of 2021 as compared to the same period this year said Sarma.

Sarma asked the police to be strict against criminals and shoot them in their leg if they try to flee the spot.
