The Calcutta High Court on Monday sought the response of Union government over a Public Investigation Litigation (PIL) filed by a 94-year-old freedom fighter, Haren Bagchi Biswas to print images of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on Indian currency notes.
The bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj on Monday directed the Centre to file a reply to the petition within 8 weeks.
The petitioner, Haren Bagchi Biswas asked in his petition that why Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s image cannot be added in the currency notes like “Mahatma Gandhi”. He also claimed that the government of India did not give due recognition to the freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s contribution.
Additional Solicitor General YJ Dastoor requested for eight weeks of time to file an affidavit-in-opposition.
In a similar petition filed in Madras High Court, the plea challenging Centre’s rejection of a representation for printing the image of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was rejected by the court.
“This court is not underestimating the fight and the sacrifice made by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and other great leaders for freedom moment of this country. There are many known heroes and unsung heroes if everybody starts making such a claim there will not be an end.”
