On Sunday, 76 Supreme Court lawyers wrote to Chief Justice NV Ramana, urging him to take Suo moto cognizance of the Haridwar hate speech calling for Muslim genocide. The lawyers wrote in the letter that the remarks are more than just hate speech; they are an open call for the “murder of an entire community.”
The Advocates stated that the letter was sent in the hopes that the Chief Justice of India will act quickly in his capacity as the state’s judicial chief.
“The events (Haridwar & Jantar Mantar events) and the speeches delivered during the same amount to an open call for the murder of an entire community,” the letter reads. As a result, the aforementioned speeches pose a grave threat not only to our country’s unity and integrity, but also to the lives of millions of Muslim citizens. Your Lordship may take suo moto cognizance of the matter and take appropriate action under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 121A (conspiracy), 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups), 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts), and 298 (wounding religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code. Top lawyers such as Dushyant Dave, Salman Khurshid, and Prashant Bhushan have signed the letter.
Top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, Salman Khurshid, and others, were shocked by the communal speech. ‘Hindutva always spreads hatred and violence, and Hindu-Muslim-Sikh-Christian pays the price,’ said the Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi, who has been promoting the ‘Hindu Vs Hindutva’ debate. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi’s sister, called the open call to “murder” ex-PM Manmohan Singh despicable and demanded strict action against the organisers.
While an FIR was filed in connection with the incident, Congress spokesperson Dr Shama Mohammad stated that no arrests had yet been made.
Videos from the event have gone viral on Twitter, with Dharamdas Maharaj of Bihar threatening to kill ex-PM Manmohan Singh for saying that “minorities have first right over national resources.”
If he had been an MP, he would have ‘not hesitated to shoot at him (Singh) six times in the chest,’ as the Mahatma’s assassin did. Narasinghanand, who is known for making communal statements, coined the term “Shastrameva jayate,” which is a play on India’s national motto, “Satyameva Jayate.” Uttarakhand police have filed an FIR under Section 153A against Wasim Rizvi aka Jitendra Tyagi and two others.
