Politicians from all parties asked that the government revoke Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri award after she sparked outrage by referring to India’s independence in 1947 as ‘bheek,’ or alms. She stated in a 24-second video clip that has gone viral on social media that the country only gained full independence in 2014. Kangana Ranaut argued that India won independence only when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power in 2014.

Senior Congress lawmaker Anand Sharma led the push against the ‘Queen’ actor, calling the statements “shocking and obscene” and urging President Ram Nath Kovind to revoke Ranaut’s Padma award.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda referred to her comments as “callous.”

Jitan Ram Manjhi, head of the Hindustani Awam Morcha, which is in a coalition with the NDA in Bihar, has demanded that all news networks should boycott the actor from now on.

Manjhi addressed the President, saying, “Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri award should be revoked immediately. Otherwise, the world will believe that Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bhagat Singh, Kalam, Mukherjee, and Savarkarall pleaded for freedom.”

Following BJP MP Varun Gandhi’s tweet, AAP member Preeti Sharma Menon has complained to actress Kangana Ranaut’s alleged assertion that India earned independence in 2014 and what it received in 1947 was ‘bheekh’ (alms). Preeti, an AAP national executive member, filed an application with the Mumbai police on Thursday, seeking that a case is filed against Kangana for her reported statements, which she called ‘seditious and offensive.’

Later, while telling that she had requested that a police complaint be launched against the Thalaivi star, Menon tweeted, “The AAP strongly condemns Ms Ranaut’s disparaging comments, alleging that India’s freedom of 1947 was “bheek” and not true independence (sic).” In another tweet, she uploaded a copy of the application she had made to the Mumbai Police, claiming that Kangana’s alleged utterances violated sections 504, 505, and 124A.

Submitted an application to @MumbaiPolice requesting action on Kangana Ranaut for her seditious and inflammatory statements on @TimesNow, under sections 504, 505 and 124A.
